Dean DeBlois, the acclaimed film director and beloved father figure, expressed gratitude to viewers for backing his latest project—the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon .
DeBlois, who is 55 years old, co-authored the script and co-directed the initial animated film in 2010 along with his collaborator Chris Sanders. They both led the production of the follow-up movies in 2014 and 2019 as well. Lilo & Stitch back in 2002.
The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon has topped the box office for the last two weeks since its release. It easily outperformed competitors over the past weekend as well. 28 Years Later and the upcoming Pixar film, Elio .

As of this writing, the film has grossed $160 million domestically and $200 million internationally at the box office. This figure is expected to increase significantly in the following weeks. Plans for a live-action sequel are also underway. How to Train Your Dragon 2 It’s already underway and scheduled to premiere on screens during the summer of 2027.
After achieving recognition in animation, this upcoming film marks DeBlois' first foray into live-action filmmaking (excluding a few music documentaries).
Yesterday, DeBlois shared an image from the set on Instagram. He mentioned, "A huge thank you to Universal Studios for their outstanding support of our film! Also, gratitude goes out to all our global audience members who came along with us! The entire cast and crew send their heartfelt appreciation!"
Background
DeBlois, who is 55 years old, hails from Quebec, Canada. Following his time at university, he gained experience in Dublin, Ireland, under the guidance of renowned animator Don Bluth. In 1994, DeBlois became part of Disney as a storyboard artist. His relocation to Los Angeles motivated him to be open about his identity.
"When I got there, I would walk along Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood and notice that everyone seemed to be openly holding hands with one another, indicating that all was well," he shared. The Advocate In 2011, I genuinely had the feeling that, This isn’t a judgmental setting. It happens so frequently that no one even bats an eye. I simply didn't concern myself with it."
DeBlois has shared life with his partner, JD, for 17 years now. Their marriage took place in 2014. It’s common to see them sharing pictures of themselves on their individual social media profiles.
