TYLER, Texas ( KETK — Some foreign individuals and organizations are now barred from purchasing or obtaining property in Texas. Governor Abbott enacted Senate Bill 17 into law over the weekend. Countries such as China, Russia, and North Korea, which have been labeled as security threats by U.S. intelligence reports or state governors, are part of this prohibition.
As per the proposed legislation, entities such as foreign nations, corporations based abroad, or their citizens won’t have the ability to buy property within Texas, encompassing areas designated for residential use, commerce, farming, or those rich in minerals.
Individuals not subject to this law encompass U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or entities managed by lawful permanent residents. Additionally, the governor has the authority to designate further nations or groups as potential risks, following consultations with public safety and security experts.
Governor Abbott has signed our legislation aimed at safeguarding Texas against the impact of adversarial foreign governments. The newly enacted Senate Bill 17 introduces the strictest prohibition within the nation, prohibiting the transfer of real estate and properties in Texas to parties associated with China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia. Our focus remains on protecting Texas—its autonomy, safety, and lifestyle. It was an honor for me to sponsor this bill in the House and collaborate with Senator Lois Kolkhorst to ensure its passage.
A statement issued by co-author State Representative Cole Hefner
Individuals who violate this new legislation may be charged with a state jail felony along with facing civil fines amounting to as much as $250,000 or half of the property’s current market value, depending on which figure is higher.
To counter the CCP’s tactics of unrestricted warfare, Texas needs to be prepared to engage in this conflict across multiple arenas, Hefner stated in a release in March. I appreciate Speaker Burrows for acknowledging this crucial matter and extend my thanks to my congressional peers who have come forth with robust legislative proposals aimed at tackling this substantial challenge.
