As part of a "strategic enhancement" and to expand its "customer experience," Alibaba ( NYSE: BABA It plans to merge its online travel agency and food delivery platform into an e-commerce group to leverage its artificial intelligence goals.
The restructuring “marks a strategic upgrade from an e-commerce platform to a comprehensive consumer platform. Moving forward, we will increasingly optimize our business models and organizational structures from the user’s perspective to create richer, higher-quality consumer experiences,” Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said in a letter to employees quoted by media sources.
After merging Ele.me with Fliggy, leaders from both teams will now report directly to the executive overseeing Alibaba’s broader e-commerce division. This division encompasses Tmall, Taobao, as well as the firm’s global e-commerce operations.
According to the South China Morning Post Alibaba's Ele.me provides delivery services for items spanning from food to apparel to electronics available on the Taobao marketplace. In just the initial seven days following its debut in late April, Ele.me achieved 10 million daily orders, which has now surged to around 60 million per day. This growth highlights the company's ability to leverage the trendiness of "quick purchases" within China effectively.
