SEOUL, June 25 (Yonhap) -- The racing movie "F1: The Movie," featuring Brad Pitt, has begun impressively, with over 100,000 pre-sale tickets purchased ahead of its debut on Tuesday.
As per data from the Korean Film Council’s consolidated computer system tracking theater admissions up until 8 a.m. on that particular day, "F1 The Movie" had an advance booking rate of 37.7 percent, corresponding to around 101,000 reservations.
It topped the list for advanced bookings, significantly outpacing the horror movie "Noise," featuring Lee Sun-bin, which hits theaters on the same date (with 8.4 percent of reservations, around 22,000 tickets).
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for attracting 8.23 million viewers with "Top Gun: Maverick" (2022), "F1 The Movie" centers around Sonny (portrayed by Brad Pitt), a former rising star in Formula One racing whose glory days have faded. He partners with newcomer Joshua (played by Damson Idris) to take part in an intense F1 competition. This movie stands out due to its thrilling race sequences and authentic portrayal of the high-stakes world of F1.
The current focus is on whether this movie has the potential to revitalize the theater business following a series of recently unsuccessful major releases.
The previous week saw the release of both Disney and Pixar’s animated movie "Elio" and the zombie film "28 Days Later," yet neither managed to live up to industry projections.
By the prior day, "Elio" had amassed roughly 289,000 total viewers, whereas "28 Years Later" garnered around 267,000. During weekdays, however, the daily viewer count for each film fell into the tens of thousands.
