CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Cincinnati Public Schools are implementing substantial reductions as they aim to stabilize their finances.
At the Monday Board of Education gathering, officials voted to eliminate 185 jobs as part of their strategy to address a budget shortfall exceeding $4 million.
A representative from the district’s human resources office gave details about the reductions, encompassing 121 educators, 23 teacher assistants and napping aids, 10 clerical jobs, and 29 administrative roles. Even with these cutbacks, the district guaranteed that no teachers would lose their employment; instead, they can opt to move into different teaching roles if desired.
The choice to reduce staff, which included social workers, led to resistance from participants who highlighted the significance of these jobs and the possible adverse effects of removing them.
In the end, eight social work roles were eliminated after a close 4-to-3 voting decision, with six of these positions already unfilled.
Even though a short-term spending measure has been adopted to maintain operations within the district, Cincinnati Public Schools still confronts a $4 million deficit. Currently, the district is waiting for state funding determinations and intends to convene on July 9 to tackle any leftover budget shortage following the passage and gubernatorial signature of the budget.
