ST. PETERS, Mo. – A national memorial honoring deceased emergency medical service workers came to St. Peters over the weekend.
The Moving Honors parade will traverse 29 locations spanning 19 states over a distance of 6,500 miles, concluding with a nationwide ceremony in Arlington, Virginia. An individual EMT is recognized at every stop throughout this trek.
On Saturday, a procession went through St. Peters, Missouri, for an event celebrating paramedic Michael Clarke from the St. Charles County Ambulance District. On the morning of October 14, 2024, Clarke did not react to a 911 dispatch at Station 12 in St. Peters and was discovered lifeless in a bedroom. Despite being immediately taken to a hospital, he could not be saved and passed away soon after; he was just 27 years old.
At the heart of the procession was a specially adorned ambulance, transporting a commemorative plaque known as "The Tree of Life," which bore the names of the departed.
"We will soon witness the establishment of a lasting national monument honoring the service and sacrifices of the numerous paramedics, EMTs, and other EMS professionals who have lost their lives serving others," stated Kelly Cope, CEO of the SCCAD.
