(NEXSTAR) — In reaction to calls from customers urging others to boycott its establishments, McDonald’s has provided an official statement regarding the changes implemented due to the policy adjustments. previous DEI initiatives, In addition to various critiques raised by an activist organization called The People’s Union USA.
The boycott, also referred to as an "economic blackout" by organizers, is set to take place from June 24-30. According to founder John Schwarz of The People’s Union USA, one reason for focusing on McDonald’s is their alleged "empty diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments." on social media.
"They engage in performative diversity efforts without bringing about genuine transformation," he noted.
Schwarz additionally charged McDonald's with taking advantage of tax loopholes and backing politicians who "endanger democracy," along with several other claims.
On Tuesday, a representative from McDonald’s addressed the calls for an "economic shutdown" initiated by The People’s Union USA.
"As a brand that caters to millions daily, McDonald's welcomes all through our doors, with an unwavering dedication to inclusivity," the company stated.
McDonald’s also said its company “generates billions in federal, state and local taxes annually, and we’ll continue to pay our fair share.”
“We welcome honest dialogue with the communities we serve, but we’re disappointed to see these misleading claims that distort our values and misrepresent our actions,” McDonald’s wrote. “Our focus remains on serving our customers and communities. We’re here and ready to serve.”
Schwarz, in a video Posted on Tuesday, seemed to brush aside those ideas.
“This is not about fast food. This is about the power of the people,” Schwarz said. “This is about sending a message to corporations who think they can get away with price gouging, tax dodging, inequality, corporations that pretend to support the people while doing absolutely nothing that truly benefits the people.”
McDonald's has reversed some of its pledges toward its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. in January, ending programs that set goals for diversity among leadership, or encouraged suppliers to begin diversity training, the Associated Press reported.
