A union has stated that the government's industrial plan represents a "critical move" towards protecting the pottery sector.
On Monday, ministers confirmed that over 7,000 companies will face increased electricity costs. reduced by as much as 25% Starting from 2027 as part of the decade-long strategy.
The announcement followed the collapse of multiple companies in Stoke-on-Trent due to soaring energy prices and declining sales affecting the sector.
Chris Hoofe, an organizer for the GMB union, stated that pottery employees have been seeking support from Westminster to "protect their jobs," and they are now finally witnessing governmental action.
He stated, "This is an essential measure for protecting our pottery industry along with the tens of thousands of jobs it supports."
However, he mentioned that the devil was in the details, and maintaining the fires in Stoke-on-Trent’s kilns presented a “current challenge, not one for 24 months from now.”
Part of this plan involves reducing grid fees for roughly 500 qualifying companies within industries such as steel, chemicals, ceramics, and glass.
These companies now receive a 60% discount via the British Industry Supercharger scheme, with this discount increasing to 90% starting in 2026.

He mentioned that it has been an extremely difficult period for companies in the ceramics industry, and he noted, "This sector stands to gain significantly from the new strategy, which will indeed have a substantial impact."
Several Stoke-on-Trent pottery companies, including Royal Stafford and Moorcroft, went under early this year, resulting in over 100 job losses.
