'Shopper Fury Erupts' as Milwaukee's Pick 'n Save Stores Shut Down

The corporation behind Pick 'n Save is shutting down five outlets in the Milwaukee region.

The affected Wisconsin locations are:

  • 1735 West Silver Spring Drive, Glendale
  • 3701 South 27th Street, Milwaukee
  • 2355 North 35th Street, Milwaukee
  • 2931 S. Chicago Avenue, South Milwaukee
  • 2320 West Ryan Road, Oak Creek.

As part of a corporate overhaul by Kroger, which owns grocery brands like Pick ‘n Save and Metro Market, the company intends to shut down 60 locations across the country within the coming 18 months. Among these, five will be situated in southeast Wisconsin.

"We're really going to face major inconveniences with this change," stated Jeffrey Walker, a regular customer at the Pick 'n Save located on 35th Street.

WISN 12 News talked to customers who found out on Monday that their neighborhood grocery store was closing down soon.

“You often dislike hearing about businesses closing down because it affects both the community and the enterprise,” Susan Luling, a shopper at the Ryan Road branch, remarked.

A representative from Pick ‘n Save told WISN 12 News, “For those affected associates, we will provide an option to move to a neighboring store.” The spokesman added that this shutdown is a component of a broader corporate strategy aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and securing the future stability of their enterprise.

"I find it disheartening. I had come across information about store closings in the news. However, I wasn’t certain whether this particular spot would shut down as well. This leaves me questioning how many others around town might close up shop too. After all, perhaps my alternative option could end up being shuttered as well," remarked Daron Hill, a shopper from the Ryan Road branch.

Deray Owens, who was shopping at the Pick 'n Save on 35th Street, mentioned that he does not have an alternative option. The supermarket is merely a short drive from his home.

“I’m unsure about our next steps as a community if they shut it down. Where will we do our grocery shopping? Are we supposed to rely solely on corner stores for this? It’s unclear,” Owens stated.

Owens expressed his worry about his elderly neighbors who rely on the store being nearby.

“I’m not sure about their plans. They sometimes arrive using electric wheelchairs, simply to visit and run errands at the grocery store, attempting to be self-sufficient and active. So, I really don’t know,” Owens stated.

Pick 'n Save did not share details Monday evening regarding when the closure areas would take effect. As stated in Kroger’s statement, this will occur at some point within the upcoming 18-month period.
