FRANKLIN, La. ( KLFY This past weekend, residents gathered to commemorate the reveal of a newly constructed tiny house in Franklin.
The project was headed by Kemyana Jones-Bey, in collaboration with the non-profit organization, Women's Enhancement Clinics of the Americas , aimed at assisting seniors aged 60 and above with an annual income below $40,000.
The development plan for small houses in St. Mary Parish was initiated in 2021, as stated by project lead Jones-Bey. Nevertheless, the program encountered several postponements attributed to continuous permit processes and the necessity for tailored engineering designs.
To guarantee the houses complied with wind standards for safety, additional measures were required since the parish is located within a hurricane zone. Nevertheless, this much-anticipated project was eventually completed in 2025.
The house is situated within the St. Joseph Community in Franklin, where officials mention their plan to develop an area featuring a cluster of small residences.
Jones-Bey along with J. Ina, a council member from St. Mary Parish, express their desire to keep advocating for affordable housing initiatives within the parish.
We don't simply aim to place seniors in care facilities," stated Jones-Bey. "Our goal is to ensure they flourish during their final years.
Ina states that this initiative is a move towards tackling the housing shortfall in the parish.
I believe this is merely the start of a larger movement with improved solutions and innovative approaches to tackle the housing crisis in St. Mary Parish," stated Ina. "Our community includes individuals from various income levels, and these options will be quite budget-friendly for everyone.
Every small house comes with a bedroom, a bathroom, a living area, and a kitchen. Ina mentions that the parish intends to construct extra tiny houses for people who require them.
When you revisit this interview in two years and see Saint Mary Parish mentioned, it will have evolved into a community of 100 to 200 small homes, sparking something truly significant," Ina stated. "This marks the beginning of an ambitious vision.
Jones-Bey states that applications are now available for those interested in applying for the upcoming tiny homes.
If you're looking to work with us for this, we offer these," stated Jones-Bey. "Our small houses begin at $40K, so we are accessible at that price point. However, beyond that, our aim is to create a community since that's something we've lost touch with.
