WhatsApp Users have the ability to choose a "summarize privately" feature located at the beginning of an extensive message thread. After selecting this option, Meta AI generates multiple bullet points that are accessible solely to that individual user. These bullet points highlight the main topics discussed within the conversation and list the participants involved in the exchange. For instance, WhatsApp demonstrates a summary detailing arrangements for checking in, along with indications of each team member’s response status.

Privacy concerns are typical for elements such as these . Meta-owned WhatsApp appears fully cognizant of this fact, providing both a white paper Regarding the technical specifics of these message summaries and ensuring that the feature comes disabled by default.

The technology employs WhatsApp’s Private Processing tech, allowing for analysis without Meta AI directly “viewing” the messages or their corresponding summaries.

This employs what’s known as a temporary Confidential Virtual Machine, or CVM, designed to process textual data before disposing of the information such that it cannot be utilized for further analyses by any entity.

A spokesperson for Meta did not promptly reply to requests for comments.
